Solar Energy Advantages (Benefits) & Disadvantages PDF Print
To look at the advantages, solar energy as energy source should be compared with other traditional sources such as fossil fuels - gasoline, diesel, natural gas and nuclear. One thing that stands out is that there are no by-products. The energy is simply absorbed through different method and converted into more useful form such as heat, light or electricity. This is the biggest and the brightest advantage of Solar energy. The other advantages makes solar energy such a compelling reason for adoption can be summed up in these salient features -
Environmental Advantages (Benefits) of Solar Energy
Solar energy is universally available among all energy sources and is not controlled by government or big corporation.  The main challenge, however, is in its harnessing.
  • The biggest advantages is that it is sustainable. As long as Sun exist in our solar system ( which is millions and billions of years), we can assured by receiving solar energy. That is why, in many civilization, sun has been revered highly because it sustains the life on our planet.
  • Solar Energy among all energy sources is cleanest. There is no messy byproduct, nor there is any pollutant before, during or after its harnessing. Advantages like these makes solar energy one of the most compelling reason for alternate energy source.  More installation of solar energy plant means reduction in the use of  fossil fuels, which in turn means less greenhouse gases emissions.
  • Solar Energy is infinite and limitless. The rising energy need throughout the world  makes energy as one of the biggest reason for confrontation between nations. Nations security is tied to energy security and unfortunately, not every nation on earth has equal share of fossil fuels,. Solar energy can reduce nation on fossil fuel dependence and become energy independent. It is still a dream, but with proper support for innovation and technology advancement, this dream is achievable in few decades.
  • About 2 billion people on planet earth lives without electricity. May be few decades down the line, when the equipments become cheaper, solar energy can power homes for these unfortunate souls.
Home Advantages (Benefits) of Solar Energy
  • Today, most of us rely on utility grid for electricity. With solar panels in your backyard or on your roof , you can power your home for almost free, of course, after recovering all the cost of equipment and installation. Today, there are few do-it-yourself projects that can drastically reduce your upfront cost and help you recover all your investment in very short duration. Otherwise, if you can also find several solar energy contractors in your local area that can install it for you.
  • If you are able to produce more electricity using solar energy, you can either sell it back to utility company and make extra bucks.
  • Energy independence is one of the most important priority of U.S government. To popularize it and to increase adoption among its citizens, federal government announced several financial  incentives in the form of tax rebates  that can save home owners more money to get on to solar power.
  • Since solar energy is available freely without any market forces of supply and demand, therefore, there is no fear of price escalation as in case of gasoline or natural gas. Solar energy free for all and there is no dependency.
  • If you can manage the upfront cost, and there are ways to do install your solar gear for cheap, you can reduce or almost eliminate your electricity bills for good. Just imagine saving few thousand dollar per year. That would be nice, isn't it?
  • The need of solar energy can easily be altered by simply changing the number of panels that is used to generate power in your home. If the demand of energy in your home increases, you can add few extra panels to meet that need.
  • Solar energy is a perfect answer to powering homes situated  in remote locations such as log home. Many times, getting power from Utility provider can be very costly. Having a self reliant Solar power system can satisfy the energy need of log houses, recreation vehicles and farms and ranches.
Due to continuous improvement in technology in solar panels and also in the improvement in manufacturing of solar cells, the cost of producing solar panels are decreasing continuously and that gives solar energy the biggest advantages among all alternative sources. With many great do-it-yourself types project for solar energy installation, you can build your own solar panels for very cheap. There are numerous guides that on building and  installation of home solar panels a weekend project for the fraction of cost.
Disadvantages of Solar Energy
  • One of the biggest disadvantage is the unpredictability of amount of sunlight. Few days maybe bright and sunny while others may be cloudy. This directly affects the amount of power output of your panels or solar collectors. With grid tied system or with battery backup and secondary electricity generator source, you can overcome this challenge.
  • Solar power plant is completely shut off in the night. Again you can overcome this by using power from your battery at night, or by drawing power from utility grid.
  • Installing Solar energy system at home will also require you to maintain it by yourself and be prepared to fix it if and when something breaks down. A good maintenance plan - weekly or monthly can drastically increase the life of your system as a whole while potentially decreasing the the down time.
  • Being completely relying on your own solar power system, also mean additional investment in secondary power source such as generators, as well as, battery back up.
  • You just cannot put up solar cells on your roof. You would need to take permits from your community, local and country offices to comply with certain laws and regulations. You may also be required to get your system certified periodically depending upon the regulatory bodies in your areas.
